Metre & Classic Keelboat Regatta - Update

The Metre & Classic Keelboat Regatta at Cowes Classic Week 22-25 July 2008 (update)

Following the initial announcement of this regatta, there have been two major developments which will significantly enhance the appeal of this event:
· We have been able to agree with RORC Rating to use IRC as the rating system for mixed fleets. Standard class ratings will be developed for the one-design classes by the regatta organizers in conjunction with class measurers. Individual boat certificates will be obtained as part of the entry process. Individual certificates may vary from the standard class rating if the data for that boat is different, although fleets themselves may opt to race on a level rating basis - the boats may be one-design but, as classic boats they will have a history based on build date and past class rules and differing levels of upgrading and maintenance. One-off boats, such as the metre classes, which mostly already have certificates, will obtain their IRC certificate in the normal way. This means that competitive racing may be achieved by all the boats that participate regardless of their particular characteristics and racing may be organized across the whole regatta fleet. It also means that individual owners can join in regardless of whether their own fleets have been able to make a commitment to participate. After the event, the results will be analysed to evaluate the benefits of this approach.
· The week of the regatta is the exact centenary of the first Yachting Olympics which was organized by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in 1908 from their club, then in Ryde, IoW. The same club are going to run one day during the regatta, to be known as the RVYC 1908 Olympic Yacht Race Centenary Celebration to commemorate this event with an on-the-water and off-the water programme, including a Gala Evening. Since our current Olympians will already be inChina by then, this is an opportunity for those left behind to cheer them on and recognize the contribution that GBR Yachting has made to the Olympic movement over 100 years.

BACKGROUND:
A new combined International Regatta is to be held in Cowes for Metre boats and classic racing keelboats from 22-25 July 2008 to be run by the Royal London Yacht Club - the same week as the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta which is being run in association with the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. The event will be run annually and such an occasion will establish Cowes as the centre for classic racing in Northern Europe consistent with its heritage. Together, they will form a prototype Cowes Classic Week at which we will also welcome the 'Big Boats', some of which have not been seen in the Solent since the 1930's.
